Singles of the Week

We may have a new design, but we still have the same old duties: trawling through singles, so you don't have to. Unless we like one, and then we really recommend a purchase.

Azari & III - Reckless (With Your Love)
With their self-titled debut album out next week, Canadian quartet Azari & III's latest single 'Reckless (With Your Love)' should make up your mind. You'll either fall in love with the bouncy, 80s-esque house vibe and find it naggingly catchy or, if it's not your cup of tea, you'll find it repetitive and irritating. We're in the former camp though. (IS)

Juan Zelada - What Do I Know
Jaunty, soulful pop with a nod to the whole Maroon 5 market. Big support from Radio 2 so a certain success is guaranteed and a shoe-in for the likes of Latitude, you might imagine. (DB)

Finn Bonel - Love's the Only Thing
Despite hailing from South London Finn Bonel has produced a richly textured and beautifully orchestrated take on classic Americana that is as good a debut as I have heard in a long time. If he can deliver more material in this vein then success is surely only a matter of time. (GB)

First Aid Kit - Emmylou
Swedish duo First Aid Kit release the second single from their wonderful second album The Lion's Roar. 'Emmylou' is an ode to the ladies of country music and has an old fashioned Grand Ole Opry feel to it. As always it is the girls' angelic harmonies that are at centre stage. Their voices are so glorious and heartwarming that you almost forget the bittersweet lament of the song. Simply beautiful. (OS)

Jess Mills - Pixelated People
Perhaps too low-key for its own good, Jess Mills' 'Pixelated People' kind of drifts by in an, albeit lovely, haze. One bonus of the softer electronic instrumental backing is that Mills' alluring vocals are front-and-centre of the track meaning that it's far from a chore to sit through, but it's not particularly exciting to these ears. Sharply produced though. (IS)

The Minutes - Heartbreaker
A rare highlight from their hit-and-miss debut album Marcata, 'Heartbreaker' is a ferociously fast two minutes of scuzzy rock that showcases just how good The Minutes can be. (IS)

Allo Darlin' - Capricornia
Quite a Kirsty MacColl air to the first single from forthcoming album Europe, 'Capricornia' sees Allo Darlin' discard at least some of their more blatant C86 affectations - with positive results. Not life changing, but pleasant enough. (DB)

Allo Darlin' - Capricornia by Fortuna POP!

Single of the Week

Elsie - The Assassin (Bang Bang)
Debut assaults don't come much better than Elsie's 'The Assassin (Bang Bang)'. Throaty vocals delivered with a feisty confidence and icy-cool hook-infested guitars combine to irresistibly catchy effect, marking out a talent well worth keeping your eye on. (IS)
