After the 2011 release of Black Sands, sceptics might view this collection of remixes as something of cash cow. The parental album had great reviews, making a successful remix album a tough ask - but somehow the disparate producers step up to the plate and deliver.

Four versions of most successful track ‘Eyesdown’ may sound like overkill, but the calibre and variety thrown up in the different mixes justifies any notions of artistic wankery. Featured artist Andreya Triana maintains a constant alluring tone throughout each version, making each remix equally as enticing. Three remixes are placed one-after-the-other, the transition between the three so smooth it's more akin to listening to an extended, 15 minute-long odyssey. Somehow the variety keeps it interesting.

The Banks remix of ‘The Keeper’ is all smooth atmospheric vocals and forceful snare, brought up-to-date with a simple yet appealing electronic melody. ‘Kiara (Cosmin TRG Remix)’ carries this electronic accent through, upping the pace of the percussion and sounding like the soundtrack to a voyage into space (or at the very least something to listen to whilst playing Space Invaders).

The vocals and basic guitar rhythm layered over ‘Stay the Same (Mark Pritchard Remix)’ are near perfect, making it the stand out track. Husky, emotive tones (yet again from Triana) add roughness and a hypnotic quality to the stoned bass line. Placed against an erratic percussion pattern, Bonobo gets it right yet again.

Atmospheric throughout, with the perfect ratio of upbeat and chilled out, Black Sands Remixed is a work that deserves to stand by itself.
