Singles of the Week

As we leave the cold winter behind, the new crop of singles winging their way to the Music Fix Towers feels like a fresh breath of spring air. Some top tunes here, but as you will see, there can only be one winner...

Gemma Ray - How Do I Get to Carnegie Hall
Pop princess Gemma Ray takes on legendary duo Sparks in the delightfully OTT 'How Do I Get to Carnegie Hall', which they also play on. Ray's passionate performance adds to the delightful drama of the lyrics. It is camp, it is crazy and it is wonderful. (OS)

Grouplove - Colours
Big, big single from Grouplove. 'Colours' has that widescreen, ensemble feel that acts like Arcade Fire bring, but this is no easy tribute. Currently on these shores for a few dates, we predict a riot. (DB)

The Good The Bad - 023
More gnarly garage rockery from the Danes. Does it meet most of the basic requirements of a single though? We're not sure it does. (DB)

'023' by The Good The Bad from The Good The Bad on Vimeo.

Beth Jeans Houghton & the Hooves of Destiny - Sweet Tooth Bird
Another lovely tune from Beth Jeans Houghton and her band. Houghton's wonderful eccentricity really shines through the delightfully offbeat and beautiful 'Sweet Tooth Bird'. After the doom and gloom of winter, this song really makes you feel like spring is just around the corner. (OS)

This Many Boyfriends - Starling
As jangly guitar-led rock efforts go, This Many Boyfriends' 'Starling' is far from the worse we've heard but you get the feeling it only truly comes to life when delivered live. On record, it's just a touch flat and uninspiring. Decent background music, but containing little to really stick. B-side 'Just Saying' contains a bit more oomph with a decent central riff and, arguably, should have been the lead single choice. (IS)

This Many Boyfriends - Starling by Angular Recording Co

Flash Fiktion - Starry Glow
We've definitely been here before with Flash Fiktion's output, but they do it in such a sharp fashion that it's hard to fully criticise. 'Starry Glow' is a short burst of synth-fuelled perky pop/rock with undeniable energy, but we'll hold off until their eponymous debut full-length to see if they're going to just be another flash in the Friendly Fires-lined pan. (IS)

St. Spirit - Pigeon EP
The title track of this debut EP is a superb piece of epic, indie rock with Miles McCabe’s glistening voice lending gravitas and depth to a great tune. It’s just a shame then that the rest of the EP is a load of Radiohead-lite rockers that just make you want to dig out The Bends. Still, one out of four isn’t bad for starters (GB)

Jessie J - Domino
Oh Jessie J. Where did it go wrong? You came onto the scene with the filthily brilliant and, crucially, different 'Do It Like A Dude' and now, you're crafting pop ditties that could be delivered by anyone. Even your previously unmistakable vocals have morphed into something that could be mistaken with Katy Perry. Then again, what do we know? 'Domino' has already been number one in the UK on digital sales alone, so perhaps we're just getting old. (IS)

Auction For The Promise Club - One EP
Are you a fan of Kaiser Chiefs but find Ricky Wilson’s vocal a little bit grating at times? Then why not check out this debut EP from this three piece of understated indie-pop ditties which highlights the gentle and fractured vocals of Zoe White Chambers to great effect especially on the impressive opener ‘Under China’. A decent effort and a band worth keeping an eye on despite the lousy name. (GB)

Turbowolf - Let's Die
After a minutes worth of weird noises 'Let's Die' explodes lead in to a balls out slab of good old fashioned rawk music that marks Turbowolf out as real contenders. Great video as well. (GB)

Tyson - Die On The Dancefloor
A brilliant injection of funky disco is prescribed for you on Tyson's 'Die On The Dancefloor'. It's not all sweetness though as the punchy beats hide a veneer of darkness that gives the track a delightful edge with vocals just that touch too high as to be unsettling. Simply excellent. (IS)

Yukon Blonde - Stairway
If you saw our recent video exclusive we brought to your attention, we hope you realised we don't just track down any old exclusive. We only do it if the track is properly ace and 'Stairway' by Canadian rockers Yukon Blonde undeniably is. With an addictive 'ooo' backing vocal refrain and some rapid guitars, it climbs its way into your head and just doesn't leave. And we wouldn't want it to. (IS)

Benjamin Francis Leftwich - Pictures
We're almost getting bored of saying how lovely Benjamin Francis Leftwich's output is, but when something is as hauntingly beautiful as the low-key, finger-picked 'Pictures', we're left with little else to say. So we'll say it: 'Pictures' is truly lovely. (IS)

Porcelain Raft - Unless You Speak From The Heart
Maybe it's just me, but it seems that there's a lot of this about; 'this' being Scritti Politti / Prince-y pop which is smart enough but never does enough to properly register. Nice, but not enough and to blame the parents seems unduly harsh. (DB)

The Twilight Sad - Another Bed
Taken for the superb No One Can Ever Know this is a dark and threatening slab of inspired 80s style goth gloominess that shows The Twilight Sad to be at the peak of their game. Marvellous stuff (GB)

Single Of The Week

Kasabian - Goodbye Kiss
Those who only know Kasabian through brain-crushing tunes such as 'Club Foot' and 'Underdog' may be a bit taken aback by their latest offering. The sublime 'Goodbye Kiss' hearkens back to the girl groups of the 60's and those epic ballads about the heartache of lost love. Tom Meighan's wonderful voice conveys all the pain and sorrow of a broken heart as the gorgeous music swells behind him. Perfection. (OS)

I would have chosen Auction For The Promise Club or any others, Kasabian would not have been in my top list. Kasabian's old stuff was a lot better. But if you're a fan then you stick true to your band "AS ALWAYS".

The song was not chosen out of loyalty, but because it was the best.
