Evans The Death
It's rather comforting to be presented with a British indie guitar act that fits that general definition, without having to complicate matters by throwing in all manner of more esoteric influences. This debut from literate five-piece Evans The Death will fill all kinds of Echobelly or Catatonia-shaped pieces in the jigsaw of your listening habits; unadventurous perhaps, but enjoyable enough to inspire repeat visits.
Katherine Whitaker's vocals definitely have an air of Sonya Madden about them, while lead guitarist - and main songwriter - Dan Moss understands the formula, mixing more rocking numbers ('Telling Lies'; the pummeling debut single 'Threads') with standard quiet/loud dynamics ('Morning Voice') to a satisfactory end. Scholars of the genre may just have found their favourite new band.

About Douglas Baptie
After too many years in the trenches, Douglas was elevated to the position of Editor in 2011. Pretty much everything you need to know about him can be learned by a spin of The Damned's Black Album and a screening of Twin Peaks. With a fondness for punk and 60s girl groups (with occasional side salads of indie pop), if your records are longer than 2m 50s, you're probably wasting each other's time. For general editorial questions, drop him a line via the TMF contact email.
