The Haxan Cloak - The Men Parted The Sea To Devour The Water
The latest instalment in Southern's rather excellent Latitudes sessions series sees the ambient delights of the one man ensemble The Haxan Cloak taking his turn in the legendary North London studio. Presented as a single half hour live reworking of material, The Men Parted The Sea To Devour The Water is an immersive, hypnotic journey through treated loops and ethereal musings.
Avoiding the common pitfall of becoming too self-absorbed and feeling overly long, this piece doesn't always manage to keep the listener totally gripped for its entirety either. Referencing the chilled beats of the likes of Autechre and Boards Of Canada, The Men Parted ... is a great album to just float away upon on a hot summer's day, full of whimsical delights and carefree playfulness. That is right up until the menacing thunderstorm of the finale, a raging, pulsing wave of distorted noise filled with a dark menace, yet gone within a flash.
