Singles of the Week
With the Olympics finally upon us it's seems strangely apposite that we have two singles called Chemicals this week.
Paws - Jellyfish / Bloodline
Two songs of short, shouty lo-fi garage pop that may have been done a thousand times before but, when it is done with as much gusto and pure energy as Paws put in to this double a-sider, then it's hard not to be royally entertained. (GB)
PAWS - Jellyfish/Bloodline by Fat Cat Records
Various Cruelties - Chemicals
It's easy to see what Hideout Recordings saw in Various Cruelties from their two self-released singles and their first release on Hideout, while not as strong as 'If It Wasn't For You', is still solid stuff. Liam O'Donnell's charismatic vocals are what propels 'Chemicals' into a soaring piece of indie rock that is nigh on impossible not to be swayed by. Cracking Dragon Tattoo-esque (well mainly the bold font minus the naughtiness) video too. (IS)
Kyla La Grange - Walk Through Walls
'Walk Through Walls' is a pretty tune. The kind that may make you sit up and take notice when it comes on the radio. Kyla La Grange's chiming vocals stoically rise above the clamouring music that threatens to drown her out. It's a song that could easily become a rousing arena anthem in the hands of a stronger performer, but as it is La Grange does her best, and it's pretty good. (OS)
Nife - Chemicals
Although nothing especially new or spectacular there is a pleasant old fashioned feel to this debut from these London based rockers that bodes well for their upcoming album release. One to keep an eye on, that's for sure. (GB)
Boy Kid Cloud - A Better Version of Me EP
This four track EP works perfectly as an introduction to the work of the multi talented Boy Kid Cloud. Title track, 'A Better Version of Me' with it's overtly glitchy arrangement and glacially pure vocal is sure to get most notice but it is the majestically swirling, lush and moody EP closer 'Gone' that is the real highlight of a thoroughly enjoyable set. (GB)
Tamara Schlesinger - Again
The lead single from 6 Day Riot lead, Tamara Schlesinger's solo album 'The Procession' is a great capella tune building layer-upon-layer of melody to create a cohesive and inviting whole. Backed up with a sweetly orignal video, it's probably the warmest of her solo tracks and a great showcase of the singer's voice. Highly recommended. (CP)
There were some fine efforts by the young upstarts but experience tells as a veteran powers through to the Gold medal.Single Of The Week
Tom Jones - Tower of Song
A simple and understated arrangement lets the legendary crooner's voice shine through on this superb cover of the Leonard Cohen classic that, if there was any justice in this world, see Jones back at the peak of the pop charts. Pure brilliance (GB)
