Delilah - From The Roots Up

Debuting with an album as varied as From The Roots Up is a statement - it's the work of an artist who isn't afraid to push their own boundaries. With a vocal range that defies comprehension, Paloma Stoecker - otherwise known as Delilah - both embraces her London roots while offering up a truly new sound combining hints of trip hop, tribal beats and simple RnB.

Lead single, 'Breathe' is a beautifully honest track in which the singer paints a touching picture of vulnerability and strength in equal measure; much like almost everything else here it's affecting after the fact, wriggling its way into your head and memory after just a couple of plays. It is however, the opening tune 'Never Be Another', with its catchy hooks which really sets out to impress and while the real meat of the record comes across the nine original tracks, we have in Delilah an artist who can put an individual spin on covers - her riff on Minnie Ripperton's 'Two People', here known as 'Inside My Love' is a great performance. Delilah's voice is both familiar and fresh - not relying on production to iron out the creases, instead her vocal ticks and occasional cracks add a level of depth and warmth which are all to often lost with other artists. Here we have a showcase of true talent.
