What do you do when your band is not touring? Sit home and read Fifty Shades of Grey? Not if you're Christian Wargo and Casey Wescott, members of Seattle troubadours Fleet Foxes. The childhood friends have joined forces with brothers Peter and Ian Murray, and the result is Poor Moon, a reasonably sweet confection that should please die-hard Foxes fans and keep them entertained until the next album finally surfaces.

Still, side projects have a tendency of sounding infinitely more interesting to the people making the music rather than those listening to it. Poor Moon may be one of those. No doubt satisfying and fun to record, the ten songs feel like snippets of ideas, snap shots or half-finished poems. Serene and pretty, yet incomplete. Songs like 'Birds' and 'Buck Pony' sound like outtakes from Helplessness Blues, while 'Waiting For' and 'Heaven's Door' have a weird 60s retro feel incongruous with the rest of the album. It's only the lovely harmonising vocals that keep the tunes from falling completely flat. All in all Poor Moon is a pretty and sometimes entertaining record that while not containing the brilliance and beauty of a Fleet Foxes release can still put a wry smile on your face.
