The Gaslamp Killer - Breakthrough

The first listen of debut full length from The Gaslamp Killer may initially sound like a very messy attempt to blend a multitude of genres with the occasional 80s retro arcade game sound effect; opening track 'Breakthrough Intro' could easily be a frustratingly tense game of the classic Space Invaders. However, give it a second spin and the tracks begin to fall into place, creating a cohesive and intelligent psych-based album. It's not an easy listen, being deeply unnerving at times with its hybrid of hallucination-inducing electronica and haunting sampled speech from GLK's parents and friends, samples which give a personal feel to the record, particularly on 'Mother'.

Packed with cameos from the Brainfeeder roster, Breakthrough thrives on the crypticness of its sound, with influences ranging from the pan-Asian twang of 'Nissim' through to the nihilistic theatrics of closing track 'In The Dark...'. The live percussion played by GLK himself gives some continuity across the tracks as he creates a down tempo journey with his aural imagery. Mysterious yet strangely enjoyable, The Gaslamp Killer has thrown a curveball into the DJ playing field.

About Holly Newins
I am resident "New Kid" around these parts. I have an unhealthy obsession with pop-punk, androgynous frontmen and Rihanna. You can usually find me either on a chairlift up a snowy mountain, or lost somewhere in a muddy festival field.
