At a time when a humongous and superb Sex Pistols reissue is getting a huge amount of press and plaudits, the last two albums from the late, great Clash frontman Joe Strummer have received a rather more low key release. Alongside the posthumous Streetcore we also have Global A Go-Go, the second Mescaleros album and the last release before Strummer’s untimely passing. The music on display is a typically Joe Strummer-ish fusion of world music and good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll so you have the upbeat rockers like ‘Johnny Appleseed’, brushing shoulders with the joyous, multi-cultural rhythms of ‘Bhindi Bhagee’ and the heartbreaking ‘Shaktar Donetsk’ which, downbeat though it is, proves to be the highlight of an eclectic and wonderfully enjoyable album.

There only real niggle is whether this release was actually necessary. The original sounds great, as it should being only a decade old, and the addition of a single live version of ‘Bhindee Bhagee’ seems hardly enough to tempt people into upgrading. That said, Global A Go-Go is Joe Strummer’s best post-Clash album and showed him to be as relevant as he was in his late 1970s heyday.
