It has been a decade since Cradle Of Filth experienced the halcyon days of Damnation And A Day, with its major label backing and ridiculously over the top theatrics. Now just a trio, still led by the inimitable Dani Filth, The Manticore And Other Horrors sees the band moving ever further away from the bombastic, sprawling beast they were infamous for. This is more a punk album than anything, meaty guitars punching out brutal riffs with the keyboards relegated to background washes.


The Manticore And Other Horrors is very good in what it is trying to be (a simple yet heavy record) but is ultimately unsatisfying as Cradle Of Filth have abandoned that camp, slightly comedic element that made them stand out and become a very guilty secret for many. This simply doesn't stack up against the likes of the aforementioned or Dusk... And Her Embrace and the band continue their slide into current irrelevance.
