The Alex Skolnick Trio - Veritas
As lead guitarist in San Francisco legends Testament, Alex Skolnick helped craft one of the finest albums of the thrash metal period in the shape of The Legacy. With Veritas however, he explores the jazz-rock that has been his love for a while now, displaying his influences proudly on his sleeve. Nine original tracks (plus a cover and a remix), each one inspired by a particular musician, but still firmly bearing the stamp of Skolnick and his trio. ‘Bollywood Jam’ sees him interpreting the scores of composer AR Rahman, with exotic and loose guitar-work and just a hint of aggression. Rodrigo y Gabriela and French electronic act AIR are the points of contact for ‘Alone In Brooklyn’ with its warm acoustic guitars and subtle atmospherics, while a fantastic interpretation of Metallica’s ‘Fade to Black’ injects the original with brilliant jazz guitar-lines and plenty more melody. Anyone with an appreciation for musicianship is sure to get something positive from Veritas, with Alex Skolnick having formed a solid and impressive three-piece.
