SXSW - The Week Begins - A Review In Pictures - Austin, Texas

15/16.03.10

South By South West is an industry based music conference/festival located in Austin Texas. An average of 1500 bands play over a period of four days so it's a great opportunity to watch the latest "up and coming" acts from around the world alongside more established bands playing slightly more intimate venues than they are used to. Although the music bash doesn't officially start until the Wednesday numerous bands unleash their wares earlier in the week to the thousands of people in town for the film and interactive SXSW events that kicked off a few days earlier.

I got off the plane on Monday evening, dropped my bag off at my hotel and headed to Latitude 30 to take in a few acts appearing at the British Music Embassy's Strummerville / Jail Guitar Doors event. It was a great way to start off my 2010 SXSW experience as each set was enjoyable and there was a great atmosphere in the room, with several new acquaintances made!

The evening's highlights were delivered by my first and last acts on the bill, with The Good The Bad's edgy surf guitar instrumentals really winning me over and the night's headliner Billy Bragg producing a storming "Greatest Hits" set, including my fave "Levi Stubbs Tears", a song only added to the set list after I accosted Mr Bragg as he was writing it on my way to the loo (thanks Billy!).

The Good The Bad

Smokey Angle Shades

Beans On Toast

Get Cape Wear Cape Fly

Chris Shiflet

Billy Bragg

My second night in Austin took me to the Levi's Fader Fort at the other side of town to view Canada's Metric. I was actually introduced to the band at my first SXSW back in 2006, stumbling over them at Stubbs as I waiting for the next band to take to the stage. I've been a fan ever since but I hadn't actually seen them live for a couple of years. Well, it's safe to say that the band are still an amazing live prospect, with frontwoman Emily Haines wowing the energetic audience fuelled on complimentary Southern Comfort and Red Bulls!

The set was pulled from all the band's albums, with “Dead Disco” and “Empty” the stand out songs of the evening.

Stick The Music Fix in your favourites for next week as there will be picture galleries from each day of the music event coming your way.
