Katy B - On A Mission
The artist formerly known as Kathleen Bryan’s debut comes heavy with the weight of expectation. On A Mission has already spawned four singles and two top 10 hits in the shape of last year’s 'Katy On A Mission', on which synths swarm like angry wasps around club friendly lyrics, and the Ms. Dynamite collaboration 'Lights On'. Elsewhere, the tinny synths of 'Witches Brew' make it sound like it’s been recorded inside malfunctioning pinball machine (in a good way, I hasten to add) while the laid back, soulful 'Movement' demonstrates both her vocal and musical range. Musically, it’s all over the dance spectrum – dubstep, house and garage influences abound – and the sickening thing for the competition is that she’s good at them all. Lyrically, it might be much of a muchness (relationships, clubbing), but it’s all carried by Katy’s strong but never overstated vocal performances so that it’s hard to pick too many faults. She does have one new twist for this post record-sleeve world though, delivering her thank yous for the album during album closer 'Hard To Get'. Thoughtful as well as talented: mission accomplished.
