Hi Emi! Would you like to introduce yourself to the TMF readership.
Well - hallo! My name's Emi McDade, I'm an 18 year old indie/folk singer-songwriter from Gloucester, and I'm absolutely THRILLED to be a part of The Music Fix - thank you for having me (and for reading this!)!
Do you have an earliest musical memory? Was there a record or act that made you think 'I want to do this!'
I don't think there was ever a defining moment, as such... My family are all musicians, so I've always been surrounded in music and have always had an innate love for it. One of my earliest memories is of being at my favourite place in the world - the music school that my mum ran when I was little. I was about 4 at this particular time and was sitting on a table top watching the teenage students do their rehearsals one afternoon, and I was playfully scolded by the welfare team for joining in with the singing and dancing. I had no concept of 'you shouldn't be learning this yet'; I just loved the music - I couldn't help myself.
If we were to look at your MP3 player, is there anything on there you'd rather we didn't see? Do you have your own stuff on there?
Oh no... And you expect me to tell you!?
... I do have a substantial amount of Dreamboats and Petticoats on my Spotify playlist... And I know pretty much the entire soundtrack to Disney's Mulan.. ...And there's nothing wrong with loving a bit o' Lips Are Moving, right?... RIGHT?
And as far as my own music goes - my phone is absolutely brimming with soundbites. They might be whole songs, they might be rushed lyrics I'll jot down whilst making a sandwich, or just a funky chord progression that will one day work itself into becoming a song.
Is there any style of music you just don't get?
I'll listen to pretty much anything! Though I'm not a huge fan of heavy metal or screamo...
Are there any artists you'd really like to collaborate with in the future?
Oh, loads! There are so many utterly inspiring artists out there. On a larger level - James Bay, Seafret, Jack Garratt... A personal favourite for me has to be Hozier. Lyrically, musically... The chance to collaborate with him would be an absolute dream.
What's next for Emi McDade?
Lots of gigs! I'm SO excited to be supporting Billy Lockett in Bristol (Louisiana) on the 29th of this month, Mike Dignam in Bristol (Thekla - a huge boat! I've never sung on a boat before!) on April 19th, and lots of other exciting gigs coming up (there's an up to date gig list on my website/Facebook!). Aside from that, I'm hoping to record my debut EP in the coming months! Gigs, recordings, collaborations... And just lots and lots of music :)
What's the question we should have asked you today?
What's the recipe for happiness? A piano + a Nutella jar and spoon. Every time!
