Introducing... Emmi

image

Emmi has been around for a few years now but too many of you haven't discovered her wonderful pop charms. The Perth-based, Devon born singer/songwriter has a style all of her own and we really think you need to become acquainted with here. Great news then that we've had the chance to ask her some questions on your behalf...

Hi Emmi! Would you like to introduce yourself to the TMF readership.

I sure would!
My name is Emmi. I’m an Aussie Brit with big hair and a ridonculous accent.
And I make music. Sometimes for others, sometimes for myself.

Do you have an earliest musical memory? Was there a record or act that made you think 'I want to do this!'

I remember hearing classical music when I was about 5 or 6 and becoming obsessed with the feeling it gave me. Like I was flying. And I knowing I wanted to be a part of that…feeling. I used to save up pocket money to buy Tchaikovsky tapes and make up stories that would unfold through each piece.

I then obsessed myself with jazz for some time, then the Beach Boys. It wasn’t till Alicia Keys ‘Songs in A Minor’ album came out that I was like… ‘Whoa! Pop doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Music from my own time can be cool’ … and I got on the piano and started singing along. I didn’t get brave enough to do so in front of anyone for some time though. It take time to get brave.

If we were to look at your MP3 player, is there anything on there you'd rather we didn't see? Do you have your own stuff on there?

No! I’m not easily embarrassed. But my music tastes really do cover a lot of ground. You got classical, all the soul and jazz greats, Tracy Chapman, and then you got Kanye and Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, some Fink and Feist for my heart, Pink, MIA and a few show tunes. I just like it when its good.

And yes of course my music is there. Some writers think listening to your own music is a bit of an awkward or egocentric thing to do… but I’m all about that. If I don’t want to listen to it in my spare time, why the hell should anyone else? I make it to love it.

You've already been on stage at the Radio One Big Weekend, but are there any other festivals you'd like to headline?

Gosh. I guess the pinnacle for anyone would be Glastonbury. And Coachella looks mighty fun too.

How would you describe your style?

In a word, ‘pop’… although that word is a broad umbrella indeed these days.
I write storytelling songs, normally piano lead (my instrument) with some cinematic vibes, vocal stacks for days (I love the feeling of community you get when you hear a choir of voices) and some crunchy beats to keep us down to earth.

Is there any style of music you just don't get?

Death metal.

Oh and I fell asleep on the floor of a rave in Berlin once. I guess there are certain styles of electronic/trance music you can only enjoy in a certain state of influence…and as I don’t partake so it went right over my head. Also, some one stole my hat while I was sleeping, so it’s a bad association all round. I loved that hat.

Are there any artists you'd really like to collaborate with in the future?

It would be easier to write a list of artists I wouldn’t.

Christine and the Queens. I feel like we’d get on. She’s a total legend and I love everything she’s about. Kendrick Lamar. The Weekend. And I want to get in a room with Chris Martin one day. He doesn’t have to collaborate with me, just let me watch him write. He has a simplicity and perfection in his writing I just want to witness in real time.

What's next for Emmi?

A few more shows in the UK and abroad with my features and new music! Many many more tunes! I’m literally bursting at the seams.

What question should we have asked you today?

What were you up to last night? Because the answer will have been Drag Queen Bingo in West Hollywood. And I’d have come across as a fabulous eccentric with a life of intrigue. Ask me tomorrow though and it would be ‘microwave dinner and bed’. I’m sorry you missed that.

(Joking. These were great questions! Thanks for having me!)
