Passenger - Young As The Morning Old As The Sea

Ivor Novello award wining artist Mike Rossenberg (a.k.a. Passenger) releases album number eight, containing ten tuneful tunes about life and love and everything in between. "Nothing's ever something til you give everything" he sings in the lovely opener 'Everything'. The lush yet elegant arrangements envelope the songs without overshadowing Rossenberg's soft quirky vocals. This is particularly effective in 'If You Go' or the wistful reminiscence of 'When We Were Young'.

The upbeat 'Anywhere' attempts to mix things up a bit yet the majority of the album is rooted deep in moody reflection, not that this is necessarily a bad thing. 'Somebody To Love', with its sad mournful guitar or the truly beautiful title track are atmospheric and compelling, filled with restlessness and longing. While 'Beautiful Birds' featuring Birdy, (another performer using a single moniker rather than their real name) is slightly twee and tedious, 'Fool's Gold' and final song, the gentle 'Home', are truly lovely, with the soft acoustic guitar a perfect accompaniment to Rossenberg's breathy delivery . All in all Young As The Morning Old As The Sea is a fine accomplishment, a true delight for young and old alike.
