Artists' Albums of 2016: Emma Pollock

image

It’s been a fantastic year in music for Emma Pollock. Her album In Search of Harperfield has been released to universal acclaim, including making the Scottish Album of the Year shortlist and – the icing on the cake – TMF’s Albums of 2016. And more than this, Chemikal Underground Records, set up by Emma and her former band The Delgados, continues to release groundbreaking records after 22 years. The still getting better Scottish musician's albums of the year are listed below.

Field Music - Commontime

I’ve been swooning over this record for much of the year. Crystal clear in its songwriting, execution and outstanding production. I had the pleasure of working with Peter Brewis this year on a Kate Bush show I put together for Aberdeen’s True North Festival. It was lovely to work with him for the first time and catch a glimpse of how the band approach things.

Sacred Paws - 6 Songs

I only heard the band for the first time recently when they released the single ‘Everyday’ which I really love. The album continues the theme of tightly written rhythmical guitar & vocal hooks and always with a real joyous energy.

Angel Olsen - My Woman

Great lazy vocals & lovely saturated 60’s pop production. Just love the song ‘Shut Up Kiss Me’. Great energy.

El Hombre Trajeado - Fast Diagonal

This album only came out recently and I went along to the launch which was just fantastic. They’re a really great live band. Tightly woven, unpredictable but never unsettling. Sue Tompkins and Ela Orleans make wonderful vocal contributions too.

Rick Redbeard - Awake Unto

I’ve always been so impressed with the ability that Rick Anthony has to simultaneously occupy the role of lead singer for The Phantom Band and be the solo artist Rick Redbeard. Two completely different sounds, from what would seem decades apart, but with the unmistakable constant of Rick’s rich, soft vocal and infectious melodies. Highlight of this album for me is ‘Golden Years’.
