Artists' Albums of 2016: Max Jury

image

2016 is the year future country soul superstar Max Jury’s career really kicked off, with the release of his heartbreaking self-titled debut album surely already earning him a place in the Great American Songbook. Fans of all genres love Max (one of his biggest champions is permanent 1990s indie kid by royal appointment Steve Lamacq) making the range of his own favourite albums of the year no surprise. Have a read below, then start tagging in your wish lists in time for Christmas.

Bon Iver - 22, A Million

A special record, I think. I usually like shy production - and this isn’t shy at all - but it just works. Future and classic all at once. The melodies are stirring and the lyrics are catchy as hell. Thanks Bon Iver for topping yourself once again!
Best track: ‘29 #Strafford Apts’

Anderson .Paak - Malibu

Jazz, soul, hip hop, R&B…what more could you want? Amazing live as well. With – hands down – my favorite song of the year: ‘The Bird’. The piano fill just shy of three minutes gets me every time.
Best track: ‘The Bird’

Aaron Neville - Apache

This one slipped under the radar. Aaron Neville has such a beautiful, powerful voice. And the arrangements/songs are class. I could listen to Aaron sing all day.
Best track: ‘Heaven’

Pinegrove - Cardinal

My favorite new band. Songwriting gets lost sometimes - especially in rock music - but these guys have it down. It’s dynamic, poetic, and relatable. You can hear the influences, I guess, but it doesn’t sound like anything else out there!
Best track: ‘Aphasia’

Nao - For All We Know

For several months we played only this in the ol’ tour van. Unique voice with incredible range. It’s a dance-y record - but I don’t feel like any of the soul was sacrificed for the benefit of being club ready. Love the synth sounds they got, too. Very nice!
Best track: ‘Bad Blood’
