How the devil are you Esme Patterson?

Hey Esme, how the devil are you?
I’m alive and well, thanks.

You’re on your third record now, what’s changed the most between All Princes, I and We Were Wild?
A sense of cohesion, better musicianship, more complex production techniques, to name a few… but I’d say what’s changed most is me.

So what can you tell us about We Were Wild?
It is an album born from transitional, transmutational period of my life. I moved from Colorado to Portland, Oregon and spent all my time on tour or recording this album. I am very proud of it, I learned a lot.

Which is the song on the album that you’d want people to listen to the most?
I really love the way that 'The Waves' turned out. The production by my friend Adam Thompson and the mixing by Adam Selzer are so deep.

What was your process for writing songs for the album?
I got out of town a few times, once to the coast in Washington, once to Bend, Oregon, and intentionally sat down and wrote the songs for the record. I chose a few older ones too.

Who’s Francine?
Someone i’ve never met.

I think the opening track, ‘Feel Right’, is my favourite track, what can you tell me about it?
It is a song about emotional and cognitive dissonance. It is a call to attention that everyone feels pain and doesn't deserve to suffer.

Your last record, Woman To Woman, was a really fascinating concept (for want of a better word) album. How did that idea come about?
I was learning to play Townes Van Zandt’s 'Loretta' and as I studied the words I wondered if history had remembered who I was only thru the eyes of a man, I’d want a chance to tell my side of the story too, so I began writing a record of songs from “her” perspective.

The difference in process between the two records sounds very different, what was it, and why did you choose to approach the process in a different way?
Woman To Woman was recorded mostly live, with a few overdubs. We Were Wild is made of layers of processed sounds.

What’s been your best experience in 2016?
When i met my soulmate, my Wynonna. She’s my van.

What does 2017 hold for you?
A few projects, all unfortunately secret… and lots of touring!

How was you recent UK tour?
The tour was very informative and inspiring. Lots of crumpets.

And how was touring with Frank Turner? He has quite a fervent fan base!
Frank is so kind and hard-working, it is an honor to play with him. His fans are very passionate, it’s really amazing.

Touring; everyone has to do it. Have you got a place you’ve loved? And hated?
I love Scotland. i was asked to join a Scottish motorcycle gang and really almost stayed. I try to give every place another chance.

What’s the toughest thing about touring?
No sex.

And what makes it all worthwhile?
Making music is important. The connection that is created in a room full of people feeling something together, is very powerful.

Where’s the strangest place you’ve played live?
An Olympic kayak training facility.

If you could only listen to one song this week, what would it be?
'Dreams To Remember' by Otis Redding.

What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?
What’s my sign: Libra, Scorpio cusp.

Esme's album We Were Wild is available from all half decent stores that sell music and streaming on many services. If you can't find it you can stream from Spotify right here.
