The Fix List: Ella

image

Dutch-Swiss musician Ella van der Woude is a much in demand musician. Under the moniker ELLA, she’s: written for film, fronted indie rockers Houses, played in another TMF favourite Amber Arcades’ touring band, and is currently preparing her debut self-titled EP’s 19 January release, worked on with Massive Attack collaborator Stew Jackson. And on top of all this she’s shared a Fix List of “Beautiful songs played with real instruments, that somehow fit the atmosphere at this time of year." We really love Ella's selections, including those of us who enjoy classical alongside contemporary music.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - ‘Into My Arms’

Watching ‘20,000 Days on Earth’ was my true introduction to Nick Cave and his music. I was very moved by the film and started digging into his work. There’s almost something religious or fatherly about him. I feel “approved” for whoever I am while listening to his music or reading his books.

Angel Olsen - 'Enemy'

Her live performances are mesmerizing. Probably the best thing I’ve seen this year. This is one.

Scott Walker - 'Sons Of'

The most beautiful voice in our living world singing Jacques Brel = pure bliss.

Barbara - 'La solitude'

This tall hard working “dame”, always dressed in black, had enough misery to write and sing about. Her eyes pierce right through me as she sings this beautiful rendition of ‘La solitude’.

Sibylle Baier - 'The End'

‘Colour Green’ is a beautiful, melancholic record. I’m so thankful for her son to have brought her music to light. Thank you Robby.

Serge Gainsbourg - 'Le chanson de Prévert'

A beautiful, poetic song about the fading memory of a lost love. His voice is somehow exceptionally silky on this one.

Sparklehorse - 'Saint Mary'

Mark Linkous wrote this song for the nurses taking care of him at the Saint Mary hospital. I had this song on my mind while writing my entire record really. It’s humble, sad and very beautiful.

Daniel Johnston - ‘Story of an Artist'

Daniel Johnston knows like no one else how to put his feelings into simple words and brilliant tunes. It’s so honest that it hurts.

Robbie Basho - 'Blue Crystal Fire'

I heard this song for the first time in a bar in Brighton, and was completely hypnotized by it. He has such a strange voice.

Johann Sebastian Bach, Vladimir Horowitz - 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659 - Transcribed For Piano Ferruccio Busoni'

This video is part of a documentary about Vladimir Horowitz. When I saw it for the first time I had to watch this sequence over and over again (and send it to all my friends). I couldn’t believe what I saw and heard. The look on his face at the end of the piece is priceless.
