The Fix List: Imaginary People

image

2017 is going to be a big year for Imaginary People as they get ready for their second album release, October Alice, due on 31 March. According to the band, the album has a morbid subject matter and “is easily our most disarmingly personal material to date.” It’s always intriguing to get a glimpse into the creative process of our favourite musicians, access granted here as the New York band’s Fix List concentrates on some of their favourite examples of strong songcraft.

Pearl Jam - 'Off He Goes'

A quite bizarre meditative country song that somehow ends up functioning as a stellar example of storytelling. With a simple repeating chord structure and just enough vocal melody to make it an engaging rare one from Pearl Jam.

Angel Olsen - 'Drunk and with Dreams'

That first EP she did, Strange Cacti is pure magic, just her and an acoustic that could of been recorded in the 1940s. It remains just a pure translation of her beginnings as an artist before the full band comes into play.

Grizzly Bear - 'Sleeping Ute'

I find this one fascinating. Epic production making this song eccentric and emotive with a touch of the grandiose.

Beck - 'Missing'

A nice reminder that Beck has a great singing voice and he uses the Wall of Sound production well.

Sound Team - 'TV Torso'

These guys did one record and this song has a little of The Walkmen and Tom Waits rolled into one.

TV On The Radio - ‘Province’

A captivating one that seems to be on it's own sonic plateau. Sounds like the future, sounds like hope.

Giorgio Moroder - 'Chase'

A great track from the Oliver Stone written soundtrack for ‘Midnight Express’. He was really the first on the block doing this kind of production.

M. Ward - ‘Fuel For Fire'

M. Ward did this great record called Transistor Radio, a great throwback album with tons of great material and a stellar production value. This track captures the sound of that record.

Ambulance LTD - ‘Anecdote'

These guys we're a great NYC band that did one solid self-titled album back in 2004. I think this is one of the better albums that doesn't get enough love, and I think if the band had continued they probably would of become something special. This song is a bit folk, but the album is all over the map.

Slow Club - 'Giving Up On Love'

I always liked this band and this is a great single, plain and simple.

Imaginary People is Dylan Von Wagner (vocals), Mark Roth (guitar), Justin Repasky (keys), Kolby Wade (drums) and Bryan Percivall (bass). You can follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
