South By South West is an industry-based music conference/festival located in Austin, Texas. An average of 2,200 acts play over a period of five days so it's a great opportunity to watch the latest up and coming music performers from around the world alongside more established bands playing slightly more intimate venues than they are used to.

Wednesday started with a trip to the Convention Center to shoot the opening of Nile Rodgers Music Keynote Speech, followed by a brief visit to The Blackheart to see what one half of sister act The Pierces - Allison Pierce was up to as she embarked on a solo career.

The rest of my afternoon was spent roasting in the sun at Waterloo Records, viewing a few acts, including Modern English who really impressed, especially as I didn't know much of their material before, bar their cult favourite 'I Melt With You'.

My evening was a very busy affair, running from venue to venue throughout the night. I've noticed in recent years, that I seem to peek at SX on a Wednesday and Thursday, getting lazier as the week draws to a close, and 2017 was no exception!

Stand out moments included a very physical set from Kristeen Young and the debut of "Indie Supergroup" BNQT at Easy Tiger, featuring Midlake's Eric Pulido, Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle and Fran Healy from Travis.

I was also extremely happy to gain entry to Tinashe's midnight showcase at 800 Congress, as part of Sony's "Lost In Music" event. The extremely lengthy queue wasn't going anywhere when I turned up, but I luckily had a SX Express Pass that I'd picked up from the Convention Center earlier that morning, that let me into the venue, almost as soon as I'd arrived.

I was glad of my earlier decision, as I was treated to a fantastic, well lit, and very animated performance, that was certainly a highlight of my week.

Although I was over the moon with Tinashe's onstage stint, I was reluctant to get to her venue as early as I did, as I was really warming to Kate Nash, playing over at Latitude 30.

I've seen Kate live on many occasions over the years, starting with a show at London's Scala, back in 2007, where she supported Omaha stompers - Tilly And The Wall, but our paths hadn't crossed all that lately. The four songs I caught, including single 'Mouthwash' at Latitude made me regret the fact, as I thought she was on great form, so vowed to view her whole set the following night at the Central Presbyterian Church.
