Check out 'Fortune', the new track from Only Girl above. Her beautiful soul-infused pop is guaranteed to give you goosebumps. Catchy and original it's a sure sign that Ellen Murphy is a talent to watch very closely indeed. Easily one of our favourite new tracks and talent of the year so far.
Fresh from the release of critically acclaimed new single ‘Fortune’, South London’s Only Girly returns with the official video directed by Davy Evans (Tourist, Hockeysmith and long-term visual collaborator with The xx). The video comes off the back of a personal request from Dermot O’Leary to perform on ITV’s The Nightly Show, with ITV then premiering the video.
Speaking about the video, Only Girl, aka singer/songwriter Ellen Murphy, says: “For this video I always wanted to create something visually striking and different to the usual performance video. I'd seen Davy's beautiful prism light work on visuals for The xx a few years back and always thought he would be amazing to work with. The gold concept, textures and Davy's unique photographic special effects are used throughout the video to reflect the idea of value in relationships.”
As Davy describes, "The liquid- like distortions juxtapose the overall pop nature of the track, focusing heavily on gold textures which are used to represent the building up of an emotional fortune."
Upon release ‘Fortune’ was immediately added to Spotify’s heralded ‘New Music Friday’ playlist. Both ‘Fortune’ and b-side release ‘Water’ were recorded at Abbey Road Studios and co-written & produced with emerging UK producer Lostboy.
Only Girl has driven widespread acclaim from the likes of Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, Lauren Laverne (BBC 6 Music), Tom Robinson, John Kennedy & Jo Good on XFM, Dermot O’Leary (BBC Radio 2) and Edith Bowman in ELLE, as well as a whole host of online tastemakers including The Fader, Noisey, The 405 and DIY.
The past year has seen Only Girl release acclaimed music with long-term collaborators Zero 7 and be hand-picked by New York DJ Kitty Cash to feature on her ‘Love The Free Vol. III’ mixtape, alongside artists such as Solange, Raury and St Beauty.
This comes in addition to high profile shows at Glastonbury and The Great Escape, supporting BROODS on their UK tour, recently selling out a headline show at London’s Electrowerkz and releasing the critically-acclaimed ‘Young Blood EP’ and previous singles ‘Remains’ & ‘Feel It’.
With the release of ‘Fortune’ and ‘Water’, Only Girl has guaranteed her ascent as one of the brightest talents coming out of the UK.
